UNITED NATIONS, Feb. 16 : U.N. Secretary-General Kofi Annan is urging nations go beyond the greenhouse gas limits already in the Kyoto Protocol to fight global warming.

The convention, ratified by 140 countries, became effective Wednesday.

The Kyoto Protocol to the 1992 U.N. Framework Convention on Climate Change calls for industrialized countries to reduce their combined emissions of six major greenhouse gases during the five-year period from 2008 to 2012 to less than 1990 levels.
